Michelle Lacroix is a certified Ashtanga Yoga instructor living with her family in St John's NL.

I discovered yoga 8 years ago, initially seeking an outlet from a stressful, hectic lifestyle. As I progressed through my practice I came to recognize and appreciate not only the postures, or asanas but also the benefits of pranayama breathing exercises and meditation. The ability to move into advanced postures became secondary to listening to the needs of my body at any given point in time. My previous training in theatre, dance and performance had taught me how to focus my mind, the benefits of physical movement, and the importance of proper breathing techniques, but it was not until I pursued yoga that I was capable of bringing the three together in harmony.

My interest in holistic and natural approaches to health and wellness deepened with the arrival of my children. I came to realize that everything is connected: what we think, what we do, and how we interact with the world around us. This idea of inter-connectivity has become the focus of how I teach my classes.

Fostering respect and consideration for the needs of one's physical and emotional state has become an essential component of my approach as an instructor. Ashtanga is a physically challenging practice that benefits greatly from a focus on breathing - if breath becomes laboured and difficult, the practice has been pushed beyond the point of comfort, and ceases to be beneficial to the student.

I had the distinct pleasure of completing my yoga instructor training at Yoga Passage in Calgary, AB. I worked with several amazing instructors, including Tracy Mann and Tanis Fishman, both of whom provided me with a great deal of guidance and inspiration. I completed my prenatal certification with Jennifer Steed at Trinity Yoga while pregnant with my eldest daughter, and found the experience to be incredibly rewarding. I am supplementing my teacher certification with on-going training in an attempt to expand my knowledge base, working with and learning from a wide range of instructors with different approaches to yoga.
